The Area

De Lopikerwaard

The Lopikerwaard lies between the rivers Lek, IJssel and the Vlist. It’s a beautiful landscape in the Green Heart of the Netherlands. It has open fields with windmills, orchards, farms and ribbon development, windbreaks and farmland. It also holds a panoramic view from the dike that follows the meandering river Lek. Lively historical towns are nearby, such as IJsselstein, Montfoort, Oudewater and Schoonhoven. IJsselstein settles right in the middle. It’s great for walking and cycling.

IJsselstein

IJsselstein is a historic village that celebrated its 700th anniversary in 2010. Its rich history is reflected in the old town with remains of the city gates and former castle still visible. Be sure to visit the 16th century Town Hall, the Nicolas basilica and windmill the Windotter, too.

The availability of great restaurants, cozy terraces and original shops make the city centre complete.

IJsselstein is also famous for its tallest Christmas tree in the world. The lights are lit in December and January and make it to the top of the Gerbrandy tower at a staggering height of 375 meters. www.degrootstekerstboom.nl

If you like to explore the area by boat, you can rent a boat or canoe at our ‘neighbours’ Jachthaven Marnemoende.

By foot

The Kromme IJsselstein route is a signposted route of approximately 10 kilometres long. The route passes IJsselstein Zuid and arrives at the 13th century village of IJsseldam and goes straight through the Kromme IJssel and the Hollandse IJssel and back to the city centre of IJsselstein. The route is available upon request.
